Purple Heart case as issued early in WWII to Navy and Marine Corps personnel (or their next of kin). Al Gleim use to refer to these type 1 cases as the coffin case and the type 2 as the titled case. These cases were used until late 1943 or early 1944 when they were replaced by the short titled cases which collectors now refer to as the coffin case. This example is in good condition. It has a few scuffs and dings but is in otherwise good condition for its age. The purple pad doesnt have any holes but the cream colored upper silk lining does show some discoloration from age. The hinge is a little weak but is still intact. Use care when opening the lid. On a scale of 1 to 10, Id rate the condition of this case as at least an 8. These early cases are always in strong demand from collectors. Nothing else is included. Santa Monica, CA USA. Terms of sale: All medals are unconditionally guaranteed as original. Antique Early U. S. Navy Type I Boarding Axe c. 1797

This is a very early U. Navy Type I boarding axe. This was the first model of boarding axe produced by the United States. It was gradually phased out in favor of the Type II introduced c. 1800, and later the Type III introduced c. Overall length is about 22.75. The head measures about 12.5″ wide (from the tip of the spike to the edge of the blade), and 3.5″ tall (from the bottom of the blade to the top of the blade). The head is marked US. ” and “V IM which is the Viewmark of the inspector Iain McLean (sometimes referred to by the anglicized version – John McLean). Boarding axes of some type were used by most major navies in the age of sailing ships. In a boarding action, axes were useful for cutting through nets that were often used to repel boarders, smashing through locked doors to get below decks, and as a general melee weapon to go along with the cutlasses, pikes, and various other boarding weapons. These axes were also a useful defensive tool. The long pike on the end of the axe could be used to pry the hot shot from the deck before it could start a fire. Axes were also useful for damage control – removing fallen ropes and spars. The “teeth” on the blade were designed to be able to hook ropes or wood laying on the deck and drag it out of the way. The Type I has the “bearded blade” where the two teeth point inward towards the handle. On the later models, the teeth point downward. The Type I Boarding Axe is a very important piece of military history. As the first model of boarding axe produced for the newly formed U. Navy, it likely would have seen service in many of the formative periods of U. Navy history – most notably the War of 1812, where the relatively new U. Navy famously showed it’s capabilities against the well established British Navy – but also in other early naval conflicts including: Quasi war with France (1798) Wars with the Barbary States (early 1800s). War of 1812 Operations against Piracy in the Caribbean and Mediterranean (mid 1800s) Civil War (1860s) After the 1860s, the boarding axe became relatively obsolete as a naval weapon. Developments in long-range weaponry and iron-clad warships made boarding a relatively ineffective tactic. Condition of this piece is as seen in photos. It has the obvious wear associated with a piece of this age – pitting, rust spots, scratches, blade worn down from sharpening, etc. The wooden handle is certainly old, and has been with the head for a long time (note the hand carved rounded end and the discoloration at the base of the head). It is possible the handle was replaced at some point during its period of use. Please take a look at the photos and feel free to ask any questions. The item “Antique Early U. S. Navy Type I Boarding Axe c. 1797″ is in sale since Wednesday, February 21, 2018. This item is in the category “Collectibles\Militaria\1784-1860\Original Period Items”.
